Cities, vineyards and the Black Forest: discovering Karlsruhe and the region for corporate events

Karlsruhe and its region is a fascinating MICE destination which I had the opportunity to discover during a study trip from 24–25 May 2019 with the Convention Bureau Karlsruhe & Region. I guess that many of you know the Black Forest, but not everyone knows Karlsruhe, and in fact these are two nearby destinations which unite under one umbrella when it comes to MICE.

While the city of Karlsruhe has one of the top universities, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and is a hub for knowledge, entrepreneurship and research, the wider region also has state-of-the-art meeting spaces, such as in Pforzheim and Ettlingen, as well as diverse offerings for incentives in the wider Baden-Württemberg region (the German state where Karlsruhe and Black Forest are located), which is also one of Germany’s top wine regions.

Convention Bureau Karlsruhe & Region ‘Stammtisch’: strengthening and growing regional MICE business

On 4 September 2018, I attended the 55^th Stammtisch of the Convention Bureau Karlsruhe and the Region. This event took place at the Hotel Restaurant Steuermann in Karlsruhe and welcomed regional partners for informal networking. A regular networking event, termed the German ‘Stammtisch’, has established itself in Karlsruhe and the region over recent years to become the main meeting point for all regional partners who work directly and indirectly in the MICE industry.

These meet-ups take place every two months at a different location and over dinner, partners can exchange their experience and ideas, network and strengthen relationships. These events, as a result, foster regional MICE offerings.

Karlsruhe Convention Bureau regional networking events

When I moved to Heidelberg in October 2016, it was clear to me that I won’t attend events as often as I used to in London. In London, I could attend events every day if I wanted! Educational and networking events, venue showcases and Convention Bureau presentations, and lastly industry association events. All events for #eventprofs who are willing to progress their career and expand their network.

By chance, I chatted on Twitter with Lisa from Ungerboeck EMEA, an event and venue management software provider, based in a nearby city Karlsruhe. I asked whether she knows about any local events for #eventprofs. She recommended me the Karlsruhe Convention Bureau Stammtisch. Stammmtisch translates into English as “regulars’ table”. It is rather an informal get-together group that meets on a regular basis to discuss and network.
